Always keep a bottle of both canola and olive oil on hand as they're the healthier types. Use a lot of olive oil for cooking, but also use others, mainly canola. Use canola in baking where I don't want the strong flavor of the olive oil, or sometimes in frying for the same reason. Also keep some sesame oil on hand when I need it's extra strong flavor (a little dab'll do it.)to spice something up. No other oils in my cupboard.
Use butter mostly in baking, esp. cookies, but try to use healthy type spreads for things like toast.
Also use pam when I need to coat a pan for baking and sometimes frying. Spray a little and then rub it about with a napkin or paper towel.
Always use leaner ground beef as I don't want the extra fat.
Whole grain breads! They're better in that they have lots of good fiber and they taste great. No taste in plain old white for me.
Gotten used to skim milk. Once again it's the healthier choice. Actually whole is too much for me now, but love a little 1 or 2% now and then.
What is a healthy type spread, because when I looked at ingredients, they all seemed to contain oil?
Hubs thinks you can cook out/drain the fat.
When you're making burgers, it's not possible to get all the fat out. For ground up beef you can cook up and drain the fat and put it in a strainer and run hot water over it to get most of the fat out, but then you have cooked away some of what you paid for to begin with. Why not just get a better grade of meat with less fat and way less trouble cooking.
All margarines and spreads have oil or fat in them, but I think if you read labels carefully you need to stay away from "partially hydrogenated" stuff as that's what's in trans fats which everyone is trying to get rid of in their food products. The thing with butter is that, although it doesn't have any trans fat, it does have cholesterol as do all dairy products. Now what we need is a "low fat" butter. :)
